Stephanie Dobbins | Contemporary Virginia artist

Art for me used to be realism as far as I could take it. Then something switched on, and I have been exploring new and more creative ways to lay down paint, to make something new to me, and hopefully new to someone else. I want my work to give you something to come back to: a face, a bird, a burst of color, or a feeling you can’t quite name. I hope you find a piece here that feels like it belongs with you.

My paintings begin loosely and build in layers of acrylic, ink, collage, and oil. I love soft, messy backgrounds, unexpected color, and the point where a painting starts to feel alive. Sometimes that takes a few bold marks. Sometimes it takes knowing when to leave it alone.

Original paintings are available through my website and I welcome inquiries about commissions. I work on paper, canvas and wood panels.
